Brian,

For the date issue:

Open the document., select the field, right click, toggle field code, change
{ DATE } to { CREAEDATE }. Don't monkey with the { }. If you do, the just
type CREATEDATE, select it, and press CTRL+F9. Right click the field again
and select update field.

If your new documents are created from a template containing a { DATE }
field, open the template and change to { CREATEDATE }. If you are inserting
the Date with Insert Date and Time, then uncheck Automatically Update in the
lower right hand corner of the dialog box.

For the read only issue, undo this action:

Prompt to open a file as read-only
You can suggest, but not require, that users open a document as read-only.
If a user opens the document as read-only and changes it, that person can
save the document only by giving it a different file name.

1.. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2.. Click Security.
3.. Select the Read-only recommended check box, and then click OK.
4.. Click Save.
