Cryptographic Services problems

I will cut to the chase. I could not extract the Windows XP
patch after it was downloaded (in connection with curing
the W32Blaster.Worm). When I followed all of the steps to
get to the Cryptographic Services, right clicked, pressed
Properties, nothing happened. I could not call up "Startup
type" or anything else. I suspect that something is going
on in the system32\catroot2 folder, but I don't know what.
I not have the worm at this point, but my Outlook doesn't
work nor can I clip and paste. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

You are correct in that assumption. Rename the folder
windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. You can then delete the renamed
folder - a new one will have been made which the service can handle

Then get - only - Q817287 and install it, which should now be OK. It
is itself the cure; you should then be able to carry on with other
updates, and the problem will not recur
