Critical updates

I am running Wincows XP Professional.
When I checked Critical updates I show 4 to download.
When I download them I get a message saying I was
unsuccessful.
It tells me that tey were downloaded on my computer,but
was not installed.
All help will be most appreciated.

I had 4 updates that ask my firewall for permission to connect to
internet. Maybe there is a clue there for someone who knows more than
I do. I gave each request a one time 'ok' to connect. All my updates
installed fine.
