Crashing about 10-15 minutes into games

I crash about 10 to 15 minutes into the two games I have installed on my system, (Halo & Splinter Cell). When I say crash, what it does is freezes up with a looping sound segment sounding like a laser sound from star wars. The only way to get back to system after freeze is hard boot.

What I have done to troubleshoot and fix:

Updated My Win XP Pro boot disk to include SP1
Update Bios
Remove unnecessary cards from system
Format C: Partition
Full Win XP Pro install from SP1 updated disk
Load All-in-one drivers
Load DX 9
Load FX 5600 UPDATED driver
install the previously removed hardware
install updated sound drivers
install the games
Verify Vid IRQ is not shared
Switch to a new power supply
Install all windows updates

I am running Win XP Pro SP1 Ver 2002
Amd Athlon XP 2000+
1.67 GHz
512 Single chip 133 Ram

Still I am crashing

Anyone wanna help me out or come on in and take a look at the system for me?

Al

Hi Alstang,

Try disabling your sound card in Device Manager
and test to see if you're able to play without crashing.
This will help either pinpoint your sound card as the
cause, or absolve it of any or all responsibility. :-)

Appears that may have done it. Now, with a SB Live 5.1 Gamer card, how do I make it work without the conflict

AL

Hi Alstang,

I would move the card into another slot, and then
reinstall the latest drivers from Creative.com.

It's possible that just reseating the card and cleaning
it's contacts may help resolve the issue.

I did that and got a crash again. I just played games for an hour with no sound card installed (using on board sound) and had no freeze ups. It is definantly a sound card issue. Any other suggestions on how to make this work?

Hi Alstang,

I'm glad to see that with a little perseverance my trouble-
shooting steps really do work and uncover the culprits. Great! :-)

Here's some of Microsoft KB's on SB Live issues:

Recommends updating the driver:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315327

Recommends making it the default sound device:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319595

This article says that if you experience unpredictable results after
installing SB Live drivers, to contact Microsoft for free patch file fixes:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=821995

You can try different Acceleration levels. Click Start / Run
type: dxdiag / click the Sound Tab and move the slider a notch or two.

The SB Live could need servicing. Explain the situation
to their support folks and they'll likely send you a RMA
(Return Merchandise Authorisation), or they'll be aware
of the issues with their cards and offer up a solution. :-)
