Whenever i try to search for something using 'search' in
start menu it freezes. I press ctrl+alt+del and my CPU
usage is up to 100%. It says that explorer.exe is using
all the juice.

Im using a laptop(Windows XP)but usually with it plugged
in so i dont think its the battery.

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
later than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show? Also, remove
spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de and
Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com.

Search is one of the more intensive operations that you can perform on your
computer, especially if you have, in excess of 650,000 files on it (as I
do). We do want it to run as fast as possible - right?

How would it run if it used only 5-10% of the CPU's power? Probably not very
fast!

I have had the same experience. Virus check is up to date. Leaving the
system running produces no results. It just hits 100% and stays there. I
have shut down explorer.exe and then restarted it and that ended the loop.
I had XP on my laptop and reinstalled 2000. Now it searches fine with
Spybot and Adaware installed. My three desk to computers with XP still
freeze on search of all drives. Scot

A similar question was posted here recently reporting an unresponsive
failure on opening the Search utility. Among a number of suggested possible
causes was the QHost trojan. The resolutions to the problem from MVP Jim
Byrd can be viewed here:
