Corrupt kernel32.dll ?

I am experiencing a problem with Windows XP Pro when attempting to install
some programs. When running autorun or even the setup program, I receive an
error stating that autorun.exe has encountered a problem..... or setup.exe
has encountered a problem. When I look at the technical info, it seems
kernel32.dll is always envolved.

Question, I will attempt to use the recovery console and restore the
original files but since I have upgraded to Service pack 1 , will it put
correct versions of files back into windows?

Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?
