Convert betwen two cells

Hi all. I'm having a wee problem and was wondering if anyone could hel
me please.

My sheet in Excell consist of 10 cells. What i am wanting to do is, i
I write the letter 'E' in Cell A, i want it to be represented by
number in Cell B. (I will only be using CElls A and B for th
conversions).

Here is a list of 'items' that i want to write in Cell A and what
would like them to be represented as in cell B:
E = 7.8
L = 8
12-6 = 6
10-2 = 4

Everyting before the '=' will be placed into Cell A and everythin
after the '=' will be placed in cell B.

So, for example, if i type 12-6 into Cell A, it automatically places
6 into Cell B.

Can anyone please help me with this. (i hope i have explained mysel
properly)

in cell B

=if(A="","",vlookup(A,Sheet3!$A$1:$B$4,2,0))

where A represents a valid cell address where you will enter you data.
