I downloaded a microsoft update for my conexant hsf v90
56k modem. It used to connect consistently at 38.6 kbps
and sometimes(on a good day with a fair wind)at 40 kbps.
Since installing this download(issued 30/5/03) it now
consistently connects at 36 kbps and occassionally at
34.6 kbps. How can I regain my lost speed? Most grateful
for any help.

You can't. A 56k modem will almost NEVER connect at 56k. This is an issue
with many things, Windows not being one of them.

You can always try to roll back the driver for the modem,
see if that returns your higher speed. I also just got a
windows update for my modem driver and I haven't noticed any
speed change. I did notice, however, that I can use the
v.92 protocals. Other items to note:
Download speeds in the US are currently capped at 53 due to
concerns of interference
Connection speed is reversely proportional to humidity-
lower humidity generally connects faster- probably due to
the line quality and length as you noted. I installed cat-3
grade phone line to my computer and my speed went from 40 at
best to 46 at worst. Original line was of 1950s vintage.
Phone line did not meet cat-1 specs until 1984

: Thanks to purplehaz and Chris for prompt responses to my
: query.I think I need to clarify a couple of things. I am
: aware that it is most unlikely that a 56k modem will ever
: connect at its max speed. This is determined to some
: extent by the length and quality of the line and the gain
: setting on the exchange line card(I am a telephone
: engineer). If I use my laptop instead of my PC using the
: same tele line it connects consistently above 40 kbps.No
: matter how many snapshots I take of the speed on my PC it
: is now consistently slower than prior to my modem
: software update.I had to have my modem replaced last year
: due to electrical storm damage(forgot to unplug it--you
: would think a telephone engineer would know better). The
: service engineer who called to replace the damaged modem
: observed the connection speed on the new modem and said
: he could improve it.He went into various options, none of
: which appeared to me to be directly concerned with the
: modem, and he managed to improve the speed by about 4
: kbps.I only wish now that I had paid more attention to
: what he was doing. One thing I am positive about is that
: the software download has changed something for the
: worse. It is noticeably slower now when surfing, and all
: snapshots of speed confirm this.

Malcom, you could try going back to the old driver. If you right click my
computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager, find your modem and
highlight it, right click on it, properties, driver tab, roll back driver.
See if that helps.

Go back. In Device Manager, double click the modem, Drivers page and
roll back the driver. Or use System Restore to revert to a day before
you did the upgrade, if that would not impact on other upgrades. Driver
updates are not always a good idea, and you should have a restore point
just before and check them thoroughly before finally committing to them

Thanks for the help and advice Alex. I did create a
restore point the day before that particular update but I
did download a lot of stuff subsequently so I am
reluctant to do a sytem restore, but I take your point
about drivers and will do things differently in
future.Meantime I will try rolling back the driver when I
get a chance.

Thanks again Purplehaz.I'm going to try that.
