Connecting A Mac to a Windows 2000 PC

Michael Isaacs

I want read files on my work laptop running Windows 2000 on my home iMac
running OSX 10.3.1

I set up a share on the PC but when I connect using SMB I get the message

"Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not
correct"

But I am using the same domain name/password combination I use to access my
pc.

I suspect something in policy settings on the PC as using Event Viewer on
the PC it tells me that "The user has not been granted the requested logon
type at this machine" This appears to be coming from the NTLM authentication
package.

What do I do? Is it something I can do locally or do I have to get my group
policy changed by the system administrator at work?

Thanks for any advice

Hi Michael!

I'm not experienced enough with how domain laptops act when offline from the
domain, but this may be an idea. This is all speculation without testing.

I'd bet that your problem may be the fact that your laptop is part of a
domain and not an issue with policies. And I'd bet that you're probably
trying to access your laptop while you have it at home and it is
disconnected from the domain.

When a 2000 machine is part of a domain and taken offline, your logon
credentials are cached so that you can log on locally at the laptop, but I
don't know if these same credentials can be used to gain access to the
laptop from across the network. Your network connection to the laptop would
want to be authenticated by a domain controller, which isn't present.

You may need to set up a local account on the laptop or try connecting from
the laptop to the iMac via SMB, which would probably be easier.

Or since neither machine is part of the same domain, when connecting you may
need to preface your user name with the domain name in the form of
"domain\username".

Hope this helps! bill
