When I do start, shut-down, the computer appears to shut-down okay but it
goes into what appears to be a hibernate stage. I have to manually shut it
down by turning it off. Then when I re-start, I will to always check for
disk errors.

Hi,

This will be a Power Management Setting in your BIOS. Check the manual that
game with your computer or motherboard and disbale ACPI

This should solve the problem
