i am wondering about the conpressfiles in cleanup option

i have a partitioned drive and my documents and files are on the e: drive. it says that i can clear up like 4.5 gigs by compressing. most of the spce on this drive is usedup with cd backup and images, mp3 and most importantly jpegs

will compressing cuase these file to lose quality?

See "HOW TO: Use File Compression in Windows XP"

Thorsten gave you a correct answer. This is the method that XP uses to "compress" old files. This is NOT ZIP compression, but a built in compression mechanism that's part of the NTFS file system.
