Compaq Evo SLOW (10+mins) from power-->logon

Hi

We have many Compaq Evo N600 laptops.

One in particular is at fault - and I am stuck for ideas....

Laptop has recently had new motherboard (due to faulty fan); new HDD
(due to really knackered disk); and another new motherboard (due to
not charging/detecting battery). All hardware swaps under warentee at
Compaq.

Laptop appeared to work fine for 3-4 weeks, then user moaned it took
10 mins to log on. (yeah right we thought).

But - he was correct. From power on, it sits at the "Windows XP
Splash Screen" with the bar scrolling - and stays there for 10+ mins.
Not every time - but most (now). We wiped the HDD and re-imaged
corporate ghost image - same issue.

We tried to install WinXP Pro from the CD - and it took *hours*. And
did the same thing (ish). It appeared to freeze - but wasn't really
frozen - it was just taking its time.

Now - its been in the lab running every test programme (CPU / Memory /
Disk) we can get hold of - and all report okay. Same tests on another
laptop provide very similar results.

It *may* be other hardware (what?) - as I assume all ports are on the
motherboard? Can't see what else it could be as XP hangs in the
normal hardware detecting phase - but all main tests work.

I'd love to send it back to Compaq - but I know they'd say there is
nothing wrong with it - as I can't prove anything!

Ideas welcome!

CPU temperature? - badly fitted HSF when mobo was changed.
Have you checked the memory with memtest86? it often shows errors when
other utils show mem as fine.

Check to see if the CPU is running at the correct FSB speed. There may be a
bios mis-configuration.
