I understand there is a "Clear Type" setting for clearer font viewing.
Since it is a setting that must be turned on or off I assume there must be a
downside to having it turned on. What is it please?

It uses a font smoothing method that is tailored to LCD or TFT type
monitors.
It improves text fonts on these monitors a great deal.
But, it doesn't look very good on most CRT type monitors.
That's why it is turned off by default.

Thanks, that did it.

It is a method of smoothing the edges of sloping lines in displaying
fonts, to reduce the 'staircase' effect by having the pixel that would
be on the step displayed at low intensity. It only works properly where
each pixel can be identified with a specific dot group on the screen -
ie with LCD panels being run at their native resolution.. Don't use it
with CRT monitors, where it can make things worse; use the standard
smoothing instead. Switch them at Control Panel - Display - Appearance,
click Effects, and change the 'smooth edges of fonts' drop down
