I'm new to Win XP, and get the above eror message while running a Chess
application named Chessmasta.exe, and two of it's related programs
crafty.exe and genplus.exe. It's a program that doesn't get installed,
but simply dropped into a folder one up from the root directory. Can
anyone explain what the error message means, and how I may go about
solving the problem ?
The attempt to execute the crafty.exe program on it's own generates the
error message 'cygwin1.dll not found'. Is it simply a matter of
downloading that file and placing it in the c:\windows sub-directory ?

Thanks in advance

You will need to contact the Chess program's tech support for help with
their program. It sounds like this may be old software that wasn't
designed for Windows XP. There may be an upgrade, patch, or workaround
and only the Chess application people are going to know that.

If these games are a dump of properly installed games that you have copied,
then chances are less that they will run because of Window Registry entries.

I have also encountered the same error on one of my customer pc while
running a Share Market applications. On that computer, it was being solved by
installing a proper version of Microsoft Virtual Machine (not Java Virtual
Machine). You may try this one on your pc as well. Easily available on
internet but you may need a correct version.

Thanks for the help.

I've managed to locate two newer versions of the program, one saying it
needs Java 5 to run (I'll post again if I have further problems).

I've found a couple newer versions of the program, and if these run
into the same problems, I'll seek out Microsoft Virtual machine. Thanks
for responding.
