ChkDsk issue

How can I force ChkDsk to run on a disk that it says is non-XP? (it is an
external USB drive that is or should be universal to all windows versions) -
XP says its not an XP drive and automatically cancels the check without
asking me if I want to do it or not - win2000 does the same thing. How can
this be stopped?

What OS did you format the drive with?
What type file system?

If it's not FAT or NTFS, windows doesn't recognize it and can't format it.

is it mac?

Open Command Prompt and there you type:-

chkdsk x:
[where x=your external USB Drive letter]
