Hi

I have a message coming up on one of my users sytems which
I would be grateful if someone could help me with. I am
pretty new to IT and the company that supports our systems
only supports the software and items we buy from them.
The PC I have the problem with was bought elsewhere and
therefore its down to me to sort out. When starting up
the computer it goes through the normal boot procedure and
goes past the windows 2000 screens. It then comes up with
a black screen which says:

Checking file system on C
The type of system is FAT32.

One disc needs to be checked for consistency. You may
cancel but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
Volume Serial Number 1B31 - 11D7.

I have seen this type of message before but normally it
counts to 100 and then carries on. On the machine in
question, nothing happens and then you have to shut the
computer down at the button. If you do cancel the check
when it gives you the option it then logs on and
everything seems fine. I have read a little bit about
convert.exe to an NTFS system, but dont know if this is
the answer or if it will cause more problems. If anyone
out there does have any ideas I would be very grateful.
Again my knowledge is still quite minimal so please go
easy on me as any long winded answers may confuse me even
more. The pc in question has worked fine for months.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this.

Hi,

I am no Windows expert. but from your mail, two things came into my mind.

1. Your hard disk may have integrity problem and fail to recover. If you
can, reformat the hard disk and reinstall your OS and see does the error
goes away.

2. It may be related to 1. Your hard disk has developed bad sectors and may
encounter problems when trying to access the bad sector. try to run
utilities like Norton Disk Doctor, MS scan disk or any utility provided by
the hard disk manufacturer that cna scan for errors.

Hope this helps.

Hi Penny, I agree with Citimouse. It may be that your hard disk is on
the way out. This is based on the fact that it DID work before and
assuming nothing significant changed.

**Do you have a backup?**

If not take one now, of all the critical data on that machine.

Cheers,

Cliff
