check disk doesnt work. states it cannot open containing files. i run this about once a week it seems to help my computer run better. windows xp sp 1a. i am running in selective start up mode to stop some programs from starting . how can i fix my CHCKDSK??????

CHKDSK has to run at start-up to do a complete check and it will usually
tell you so then offer to set to run at next start-up. I find I have to run
it when booting from the CD and selecting the console because it never
starts when my system reboots.
Are you sure the selective start-up isn't causing your problem.

Are you using Zonealarm 5? You must uninstall ZA 5 completely not just
disable it from starting up. This is a known issue with ZA 5. I dropped
back to 4.5 until they fix it.

Switch of the computer not re boot leave it off overnight and see if that
works. I had same problem caused by two instances of chkdsk fighting over
the files

thanks neil. have since taken off programs and am currently running in normal startup mode . do not know how to run form boot disk. also do not have floppy disk drive.
