I have an opportunity to change my computer and what I would like to know is
if I can take the hard drive out of this computer and put it into another
one and would it work OK that way or would I need to reload Windows XP.

I would be changing from an Intel Celeron to an AMD Duron.

You will definitely need to do a repair install of the
operating system because the drivers needed to run an Intel
Celeron are very different from an AMD. There will be no
need to do a clean install but it would be advisable to back
up your data files in case there is a problem.

It might also be a good idea to be sure to have only the
essential installed until after the reinstall is complete
and then reinstall the devices such as printers, scanners
etc.

Here is MS instruction

You could certainly try it.

It probably will not work. If it does work, it will have the
wrong drivers and settings for any hardware that has changed.

I put it off and put off. I debated spending the time to try it.
I chickened out and decided to go with a fresh install and
reloading all the peripherals programs. It takes a fair amount of
time.

More than just the processor is changing. The motherboard will be
different. All support for on board devices, different.

You can drop the drive into the new system but I wouldn't let Windows
attempt to boot. Instead, boot with the XP CD and run a repair install. The
method in the following article will work for your purposes:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

NOTE: The above article applies to retail CD or a generic OEM CD. If your
Windows came preinstalled and your recovery media has been customized by
the manufacturer, check your system manual for restore/repair options and
for directions.

Many thanks to all that replied to my question. I now have a better
understanding of what I need to do.

Greetings --

Normally, and assuming a retail license (many OEM licenses are not
transferable to a new motherboard, and none are legitimately
transferable to a new computer), unless your motherboard is virtually
identical (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS version,
etc.) to the one on which the other WinXP installation was originally
performed, you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade)
installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will also require re-activation. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
