Can anyone explain to me how I can store details on a CD-R Disc without any
difficulty, but have NEVER managed to store work to a CD-RW Disc. My
computer refuses to acknowledge any disc is in the drive whenever I attempt
to use a RW disc. I have purchased several brands of this type of disc,
but none are recognised. Is it possible that my computer just can't handle
such discs. Any assistance would be appreciated, as I shudder to think how
much time I have wasted on this matter.

Hi,

Not to sound insulting, but does your computer have a CD-R drive or CD-RW
drive? Are you using software that allows you to write to them?

Jeff

Sorry Jeff, I'm obviously confusing the issue. My computer has a 'CD'
Drive and a DVD Drive (like almost all computers), and I can currently use
the ordinary CD-R's for storing files without any problems. The CD-RW's
however, are simply not recognised by the computer. I am asked to
place a CD in the tray - whenever I try to use a CD-RW disc. I am trying
to establish just how I can use a Disc that can be re-written. Ken.

Hi,

If you CD drive is only a CD-R it will probably not recognise a CD-RW disk
properly.

Jeff

Thanks to all. I followed one of the 'links' suggested, and discovered to
my surprise that both my CD drives were 'Read' only. I suppose I'll have
to splash out now.

Salut/Hi KenS,

I'm no expert, but may I make a suggestion that will help them to help you.

What is the make and model of the CD drive?

I nearly made a similar mistake. I recently bought a new portable with a
drive that was CD/DVD compatible (there was no documentation for it), and
the Toshiba had quite a few references to DVD RAM. Now to my simple mind,
ROM implies read only and RAM implies read/write, so I went out to buy some
rewritable DVDs. I discovered that you have to know the RW speed, so didn't
buy any. When I got back home, I did some research and found out that in DVD
technospeak, RAM is simply a different format of storing information. (At
least I THINK that's what it is). I also got distinctly peeved to find out
that modern RW Cds have to be of the right kind, high speed ones or low
speed ones to be correctly written or re-written. So I then had to find out
what the characteristics of my drive were!!!

I've never heard of a CD-R only burner. Usually burners will burn both onto
CD-Rs and CD-RWs. It's CD-ROMs (read only) that may read only CD-Rs and NOT
CD-RWs, however, these days they are few and far between.

That sounds like a damaged drive to me.

A number of years ago, CD-R drives existed. That was before CD-RWs came
out, but I do not believe that nowadays someone would be using such a drive.
