Since Microsoft informed me that "DIRECTCD" was
no longer functioning, (due to the fact that it contained
harmful software),I should go to "ROXIO" & get an update.

I DID this, & downloaded "ecdc_v5.3.5.10_plt_enu"
("Easy CD", their upgraded version of "DIRECTCD").

However, when I attempt to run it, I get this
error message: "The update has been canceled. No
qualified Roxio product can be detected.". This means
that I now have NO method of creating a running
CD RW disk, which I desperately need.

Plese help. (I have just converted from "WINDOWS
ME" to "WINDOWS XP", which is when I started getting your
error message, telling me that I no longer
have "DIRECTCD", which, of coures, I don't).

Hi, Cavan. You aren't talking to Microsoft here. This is a newsgroup for
peer-to-peer tech support for Windows XP. It sounds to me like your
original Roxio product was uninstalled and so the upgrade didn't work.
However, since I don't have anything by Roxio, I can't check. You
should contact their tech support and see what they say. Most
definitely the earlier versions of Easy CD Creator and DirectCD are
incompatible with Windows XP.

The version 4 of Direct CD does not work in XP, and has to be replaced.
Roxio, though, have a policy of providing *no* upgrades from one major
version (4) to another (5 - or now 6). That download you got would only
upgrade an earlier variant of 5.. They require you to pay up for a
*full price* new copy.

What you can do is use the Easy CD 4 only, and get a third party
replacement for the Direct CD - I suggest DLA from
http://www.sonic.com/products/dla/features.asp

To do that, first get the upgrade to take your version of 4 to 4.05

Then uninstall all your present Roxio software Easy CD, Direct CD, Take
two. Tidy up residual registry entries - get a registry patch file,
cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click
on it and merge it into the registry

Then install the third party program
for $19.99 to download. It is a good program and fair on compatibility
with reading your old Direct CD disks

Then install the Easy CD 4 - only - do *not* install DirectCD; when the
setup exits, before rebooting, run the upgrade to 4.05. That will
usually work in XP

Must be done that way round, at least with DLA, which will not install
if it finds traces of Roxio around
