hello, for some reason all of a sudden after turning on my computer one day
both my cd drives are undetected by windows. they are detcted in the bios
though, and function (open and close), in the windows hardware manager it
says that the drivers have been loaded but the deviced could not be found
(they have a yellow exclamation mark beside them). i tried resetting some
bios settings, and uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling but they just
are working (not showing up in my computer, and im unable to access anything
on the cd's), what could be a cause for this problem? what steps should i
take to attempt to correct this?
thanks for any help in advance.

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website

CD-ROM Drive or DVD-ROM Drive Missing After You Install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320553

CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

(It'll fix code 41 errors too as per the contents of the last kb article)

Probably some driver type files (often from CD burning) have gone AWOL,
leaving unsatisfied references in registry. To tidy up, get a registry
patch file, cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract
it, r-click on it and merge it into the registry and reboot

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you use.
