CD and DVD errors

I began experiencing problems accessing my CD(F and DVD
(G drives. I can no longer access the F: drive and
access to the G: drive is sporadic. Looking in the log
files I have "bad block" messages.
I have tried to reinstall Windows XP from the CD ROM but
experience access problems. It will boot from the CD but
while installing the files it will hang.
The computer is a COMPAQ desktop system.
Sometimes G: will work fine for awhile then fail on access
to the CD.
I do not have internes access at home so I am not aware if
there are any patches for this problem.
I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers from
the windows XP disk but that doesn't seem to fix the
problem.

it really sounds like the ribbon cable connecting the
drives is bad.
