can't open up old files from Windows 98

I have recently installed XP on our computer, replacing
Windows 98. Now I can't open any old files created in
Microsoft Works. I can't find anything in the support
literature to figure this out.
Do I really have to pay for support from Windows to
figure this out?
Thank you,
Lisa

If you made the file with works 2000 and open it with
works 98, it won't work. but from a lower to higher
version it should work fine.

are you able to find the files but are denied opening
them? please give more specifics on your error.

Sounds more like they dont have works on XP.

If thats the case and they still have their old Works from 98 they could try
installing that I would guess it would work.

Remove my socks for email address
1. install Works, Works Suite on XP system;

2 Still have the old PC running? Open the files in Works, save as...
Word .doc or Rich Text .rtf (if avail.), trasnfer to new PC, these will
likely open in wordpad, if you con';t have Office / Word on the new PC.

Personally, I just don't get why I couldn't open a friend's works docs
in Word - MS is both of them after all.

Works is not a part of Windows, whether XP or 98. Nor is Microsoft
Office. You have to install it onto the system - the CD or floppies you
had to install to the 98 should be usable again on XP
