cant fax in win xp

the fax service won't complete the faxing process in my win xp system. it
starts and i can hear the phone answering with the typical modem connection
sounds but then the computer warns that there was an error qand the fax
wasn't sent.
the modem appears to be a us robotics 56k win modem or voice fax modem
internal.
i had to install windows messaging and microsoft fax when i was running win
2k to be able to fax, but i don't know if doing the same thing in win xp pro
will be compatible.
can anyone please advise on how to send faxes in win xp?

check that the fax service is installed from windows components.

Go to add/remove progs. windows components and install fax services

have you disabled call waiting ?
