can't change back to 256 colors

I swiched to 16 colors. When I decided that 16 colors was
not for me, I selected 266 colors, but it just went back to
16 colors. Can you help me?
 
I think it was a problem with your video drivers. Try to
download the drivers, the most recent version, from the
manufacture. Make sure to download the drivers of win
2000 or win XP rather than win 98.

Right click on MyComputer->Properties->Hardware Tab-
Device Manager->Expand the Display Adapters->right click

the sub icon in Display Adapter->properties->Drivers Tab-
Update Drivers->find the location where you by default

install the video drivers.
