yes...but cant crack open the pfc file
The PFC (Personal Filing Cabinet) files can only be opened within AOL if you
want to click them or view them without all the extra coding characters
inter mixed with the plain text part. The bookmarks (Favorites) each have 2
parts, the name of the web page and the URL (address) of the page. The URL's
are indexed and stored separately from the names in the PFC. To "crack open"
your PFC, simply right-click it and OpenWith NotePad and set NotePad
wordwrap on, and page down a little and you can see all the URLs one after
another first, but the web page names that go with those URLs appear in the
latter half of the file. If your Favorites were organized into subfolders,
that further complicates things. Of course you can select and copy any of
the URLs from NotePad and paste into the address bar of Internet Explorer
and re-visit the site, and then bookmark the site in IE's favorites folder.
As for websites that offer to convert AOL favorites PFCs to MSIE format, if
you upload your "Personal" files to their site, well, I just don't like the
sound of that.
Since the AOL program has a built-in Favorites to HTML convertor, it is
simplest to put any AOL cd, (version 4 or higher,) in your computer and
briefly re-install it. (You don't need to connect to get upgrades or
anything.) FileOpen your favorites PFC in AOL, position it to the left side
of your screen. Click Write to start a new email message, and position it
beside the favorites, with the bottom edge higher than the bottom of the
favorites scroll bar. (So auto-scroll doesn't keep scrolling the favorites
out of view.) Then simply drag and drop your favorites into the text area of
the email document, one at a time, near the bottom of the text area, and
press ENTER after each drop, so they are each on separate lines. (Right hand
mouse users can right thumb press the other Enter key on the numerical
keypad if you like.) As you are doing that, you can right-click on the PFC
sub folder icons, click Edit, ctrl-C to copy the folder name, click in
email, and ctrl-V to paste folder names as dividing lines between favorites
links. After all are transferred, you don't need to send the email anywhere,
simply click File on the menu bar, and Save As, and name the email file
something like "MyFavorites.htm", and save the file to your DESKTOP, (not
the AOL "Downloads" folder which will disappear when you un-install AOL
later. If you have a "mail.pfc", you can open it and open each mail, and
FileSaveAs each of them as [filename].HTM files too, if you like.)
Now, hold your Windows logo key down, and press M to expose your desktop to
view and double-click the MyFavorites.htm file to open it in Internet
Explorer, to verify that the links are indeed links (usually blue underline
text.) You can then right-click and View Source to edit the favorites page.
(It is simpler to organize the links in the order you like, while still in
the PFC view, since you can drag move them there.) You can also drag and
drop those links from that MyFavorites.htm page into your Internet Explorer
Favorites, or right-click links and "Add to Favorites." (Oh yeah, hold your
Win key down again, and hold shift, and press M again to un-minimize your
windows and cover your desktop again.) Now, if you are extra really for sure
that you don't need AOL anymore, un-install it. (Keep the CD.
