cannot create a new data file in outlook 2003

I have just upgraded from Outlook XP (2002) to Outlook 2003. I am not using
Exchange Server.
I want to create a new .pst file so I can transfer all of my data in my old
pst file to the new one (therefore getting the data in the new Unicode file
format).
However, when I try to create a new data file, the dialog box that asks for
the type of storage does not contain any items and the only option I have is
to cancel out of the dialog. Any ideas what might be going on?

Thanks in advance

Is this a stand-alone machine or are you on a network?

What specific steps are you taking to create the new data file?

You might try doing a Detect & Repair (Help menu) on Outlook.

Hi Ben,

This is a standalone version of outlook. I have tried creating a new data
file using the Mail applet in control panel, I have tried creating a new data
file using the File-New command from the menu system. I have also tried
creating a new profile (thinking my profile may be corrupt) so that I could
then add a data file to that profile, but i am unable to create a profile
(using the Mail applet).

I have also tried a detect and repair, rebooted and still no joy. I am
really stuck!

Thanks for any further help you might be able to offer.

O.K., so just to be clear:

You start Outlook. You click File | New | Outlook Data File.

The New Outlook Data file window opens but the "Types of storage" field is
empty and the OK button is greyed out?

You might go to Start | Run | Regedit and see if the DisablePST key exists
here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook

If it does, select it and delete it.

(Disclaimer: Be very careful editing the registry and make sure you have a
good backup of your system first. If you make a mistake while editing the
registry it can cause data loss, system problems and persistent re-runs of

That is exactly what happens. That registry key doesn't exist...
Anything else I can try? Thanks for your continued help!

p.s. when I try to create a new profile, it allows me to type in a profile
name then I click "ok". After that, a message box comes up telling me "There
was an error locating one of the items needed to complete this operation. It
might have been deleted". After I click "ok" to this, it seems as though the
profile is not created, yet when I re-enter the create profile dialog a new
profile is there. However, I still cannot create a new data file in the new
profile. Not sure if this is relevant (I would imagine it is), but I thought
I would mention it.

Well it seems that a complete uninstall then re-install of Office has fixed
the issue. Thanks for your interest in my plight!
