I had an earlier installation of WindowsXP and needed to keep it until I had
the new (same) version of WindowsXP installed in another directory.

Can I now re-name the Windows2 directory folder to Windows?

Could it cause problems>

Hi,

No.

Yes. You cannot change the installation directory name, this is where all
system pointers (registry, etc.) will be looking for various supporting
files. If you change the name, some pieces may not function properly.

Can it be changed then in the Registry?

Do you have ANY idea how many jeezly registry entries you
would have to change?

Obviously not, or else you wouldn't have asked the
question.

Make sure you have the original CDs for the version you
want to keep. Make sure you have the passwords and
usernames for said version. Back up your personal files
to something not attached to your computer (CD, ZIP
drive, floppies, etc.). Make sure your BIOS is adjsuted
to boot from CD. Do a low-level format or your hard
drive. Install the OS version you want to keep. Turn on
your firewall. Connect to internet and update from
microsoft.com.

I have worked many times in the Registry. I am familiar with it. BUT - I
never said ( and do NOT) want to format the harddrive .

That is a no no. Got all things installed.

Not hardly! You got 2-4 weeks of totally free time to change every single
pointer from the old folder to the new folder.

And that's on an assumption that you'd find them all. And that's just the
registry.

You can alwasy think of the folder name as a security feature. Hackers
and viru's often look for Windows file in C;/Windows rather then
c:/windows2 :)
