I have a report in which I would like to xross-refer to a line number. If
text is added so that the line number changes, I want the coss-reference to
update itself, as you might expect. I fear it ain' possible , but?

No, I'm afraid it's not...

What *might* work would be a pseudo-line numbering, similar to what the legal
pleadings use. This is a frame, located in the margin. The paragraphs match
the line height of the text in the document, there are paragraphs down the
height of the frame, with auto-numbering applied. These would be accessible
for cross-referencing, but you'd need to insert a frame (probably from an
AutoText entry) for each page. And your line heights would have to be an
"exact" setting.
