Time for a little competition for fun here... the aim, to build the cheapest PC possible - including a monitor, mouse, floppy, keyboard and speakers (as well as the usual stuff).

A handy link may be www.ebuyer.com as it is dirt cheap!

I'll put my entry in tomorrow once I have found some extra bits :)

Thats right, we'll make it hardware only - so we can use a free OS on it (saves £70 right away!)

I haven't used Novatech for a while but as I remember they aren't cheap at all. Good service though.

And I think building a system from ebuyer is somewhat speculative, unless you don't mind a lot of hassle getting all your parts from them and if you're unlucky enough to receive a faulty component, waiting up to six weeks for an RMA.

Still, I understand this is theory only so yes, let's give it a go.

I'm thinking the end result is probably only going to be fit for Office and web browsing though.

Totally speculative, as I've heard some bad stuff about Ebuyer :) Just a theoretical thing 8)

OK, here we go, first try:

A fine, fine machine ;)

El Cheapo Crapola Computer:

Motherboard: PC Chips 810LMR V7.X 266FSB £32.07
Graphics: Onboard
Sound: Onboard
LAN: Onboard
CPU: AMD Duron 1.3Ghz £26.68
Cooler: Coolermaster DP5-6I11A Socket A Cooler £3.45
RAM: 128Mb PC133 SDRAM £14.19
HDD: Maxtor Diamondmax 30Gb UDMA 7200rpm £39.00
CD ROM Drive: Creative CD ROM Drive 52 x OEM £10.57
Floppy Drive: Sony OEM £5.47
Case/PSU: JNC 4JA Midi ATX w/300W PSU £13.81
56K Modem: Ebuyer internal 56K £7.04
Keyboard: Scorpius keyboard in media green £2.34
Mouse: Chic 130 2 button mouse: £0.98
Speakers: JNC SP 350 pair speakers £3.57
Monitor: Relisys TE555 15" £63.17

Total: £222.34

All prices include VAT

As the board only supports CPU's up to 1.2Ghz, unless there's a new BIOS it's
likely the Duron would have to be underclocked by 100Mhz.

Price does not include delivery, add about a tenner.

Nice 1 Floppy:bow:
However, if you replace the relevant bits with the following:
Crucial 32mb SDRAM PC100 CL2 £11.74
MSI 52x Internal IDE CD-ROM Drive – OEM £10.40
JNC 4JA 8850 Nokia Style Red ATX Midi Tower Case 300w PSU £13.81 (I think the case u specified is out of stock!!)
PS/2 Keyboard for Windows UK Version £1.65

...I reckon it makes the overall price £3.31 cheaper. (£219.03)

Oh...and I'd go and fetch it from eBuyer, thus saving the £10 delivery (Am I cheap or what!:D :D )
