I have the annoying Boot.malmo virus message popping up
everytime I start my WXP pro. I read that it can be
removed by running fixboot from the recovery console. Can
somebody confirm (or deny) that this is the way to get
rid of this, without causing more serious problems to the
system. The basic question, I guess, is: is it effective
to run fixboot, and is there any risk of loosing data, or
reinstalling everything.

MBR viruses are tricky to get rid of. There is a app
called bootscan.exe that cleans viruses. I got it from the
McAfee website. You have to boot up the pc with a 98
startup disk, but you have to copy himem and emm386 to the
disk to get enough memory allocated to run the bootscan.

To find bootscan, do a search for Master Boot Record (MBR)
viruses.
