boot.ini missing

After 3 months of no problems with XP Pro on a notebook I started to get
message "No Boot INI using C:\windows to boot". I did a search of the
C:\drive and there is not Boot.ini (yes I did uncheck the hidden files view
option and verified that I can see hidden files). How do I re-create the
BOOT.INI file? TIA RonM

Unchecking hidden files won't show it, you'll need to uncheck "Hide
protected operating system files" - did you also do that?

Sample boot.ini file

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Go to Run/msconfig
What information is under the BOOT.INI tab?
You also should have a "Check all boot paths" button there.

Tried that - all it does is rebuild the text file.

You have to rebuild the boot configuration file using a WinXP CD

The command to use in the Recovery Console is
BootCfg /Rebuild

To use the Recovery Console:

Note the handy registry edit halfway down the scroll. This makes the
Recovery Console not to ask for a password.
