don,
Work through the solutions, such as Ad-aware, CWShredder and Spybot, at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Also note the security tips on that page and be sure to visit Windows
Update. Recent security updates prevent some of these hijackings.

Don

You have "Cool Web Search" Spyware
variant: 'CWS.aboutblank'
Info:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html#abou
tblank

Download and run CWShredder - Cool Web Shredder:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip
Close all Browser windows and running applications, unzip
the tool, click
on the executable and follow the prompts.

I have Windows XP and am having the same problem (bogus home page) but I
can't navigate anywhere at all in Internet Explorer, it is completely locked
up at some site that starts with www.perfectnav. with a long string of
numbers and letters following that. Could anyone help me with this problem?
How do you download CWShredder and Spybot if you can't change the website.
Thanks

As long as you have Kazaa installed, perfectnav will persist.

Check your system for "hijackware":

CoolWebSearch Chronicles

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.mvps.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

What exactly is Kazaa and can I safely uninstall? As you can tell I am
completely new to XP. I knew this was on my computer, but don't know what
kind of program it is or what it does. Thanks for your help. Possibly
another dumb question. . . how can I access the websites you gave me when I
can't navigate anywhere in Internet Explorer.

Kazaa is a P2P file-sharing application (read: stealing copyrighted music,
etc.) which also installs hidden hijackers which compromise your system and
its security. You'll need both of these to get rid of it and to be able to
connect to the 'net again:

KazaaBegone
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

LSP-Fix
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

You'll have to boot into Safe mode to be able to connect to the 'net
currently: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315222.

I used the fix that I mentioned above and it worked like a charm. SPYBOT, ADAWARE, and PEST PATROL will keep you from getting it again in the future but will not fix the problem. You must follow that link and remove the problem that the HIGHJACKER put in your registry
