Blue screen after terminating an XP update

I switched off my machine in the middle of an XP update - not a good idea! When I subsequently logged back on, the XP boot cycle was interrupted with the error message: 'The instruction at "0x5ad7c310"referenced memory at "0x0178800". The required data was not placed in memory because of I/O error status of "0xc000009c". Clicking on terminate or cancel results in a Blue Screen: STOP: C000021a {Fatal System Error} and status of 0xc0000006 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system then shuts down and reboots automatically with the same result. I'm writing this from Safe Mode. Is there any way I can correct this error without having to resort to my recovery disc?

Ted, did you try a System Restore from Safe Mode?
