I've recently started to receive the following message on my screen,
'could not load the target dll ("invalid BackWeb application id 4448364"
error code 126) does anyone have an idea what it means and how I can correct
it?

Could this be of any help? http://tinyurl.com/47vps

Might be to do with F-secure antivirus.

Hi,

It means that you have backweb running at boot on the system even though it
is not needed. This application is commonly placed on many preinstalled
machines, and is not necessary for normal operation. Click start/run, type
msconfig and click ok. Go to the startup tab, uncheck the line that loads
backweb. Click apply/ok and reboot. The error message could also be resolved
by reinstalling the software, but as I mentioned it is not necessary.

May I suggest finding out why backweb is running before being sure its not
needed. For one example, Backweb is how F-Secure Antivirus goes about its
automatic updating, and removing that ability from a virus scanner have have
nasty consequences.

And F-Secure Antivirus actually has the gall to charge for this?

Just what I would want, AV software that installs spyware.

*sigh* Backweb isn't "spyware", don't believe everything you read on a
website. Especially a website that has the gall to sell snake oil "Ram
accelerator" tools?

Backweb is a tool for managing software updates. Anyone who wants can
licence it to put into their product. Not everyone who licences it is a nice
person; some are and some are not. That doesn't make backweb evil. Like a
gun, the problem isn't the tool but the intention of the person holding it.

That is why I suggested the OP should investigate what put backweb on their
machine and make a decision based on that basis. Far more rational, no?
Aside from anything else, if backweb was put there by a malicious program
then removing backweb hasn't fixed the actual problem!

Hey I didn't know Alex Nichol died. I have been out of the tech groups for
a while. But I do remember him greatly for the good help he used to give.
Sorry to hear he has gone.
