automatic outline in Word

Can you automatically create an outline from an existing document? For
example, if I were to write a research paper and wanted Word to create an
outline for me, could I do this? I use Microsoft Office Word 2003.

To the extent that the outline is created from the structure of your
document, yes: format the document using defined styles, then create the
outline from the relevant styles.

Word has no ability to interpret content.
