Are windows xp upgrade cd's bootable

If I buy one of these cd's at wal mart for example-is the cd bootable so i
can install it on a new system?
To verify the upgrade path,can i simply type in my product key for windows
98? I dont want to install one then the other

Yes. Set BIOS to boot from CD drive first.
 
Yes they are bootable, but you still need to have a prior
Windows OS CD or an upgrade will not install to a new
system.

Hi,

A retail CD, full or upgrade, is bootable. To use the upgrade for a clean
installation, you must be able to insert a Win98 CD, the product key is not
sufficient, you must possess the media itself. This must be a retail or
generic OEM disk, a "system restore" disk (commonly provided by many system
builders) is not going to qualify as it is not in the proper format (they
use a proprietary image format).

Try waiting longer than 7 minutes before rudely wasting others'
