Antivirus programs - not working

I have been using Norton Systemworks 2002 including NAV2002. I scanned for
viruses tonight, and it said that it couldn't because there was an error.
Now, I installed PC cillin after removing NAV. When I try to go into this
one, I get the thing saying that it's not responding... Why aren't any of
them working? Do I have a virus that prevents me from checking for viruses?

Possibly. There are viruses that can disable a/v programs. Scan in Safe
Mode.
