I went through Windows Update and got the following
Updated for XP Pro. 828026 and 828750. Let the Auto
Notify grab then in teh background. Installed them and
rebooted, and noticed a problem. The machine boots up, I
can select between the Admin account and a limited
account. If I select the Admin account, it says loading
settings, hums for a few seconds, and then says Saving
settings and shuts down.

I can boot into Safe Mode with the Admin account and
navigate just fine. (But I cant do much since I'm in
safe mode)

Limited account seem to work fine. I can click into them
and they will fire up and run just fine. NO sudden
shutdown.

I tried adding another Admin account in safe mode.
Restarted. Second Admin account does the same as the
first. Starts loading settings, then shuts down.

I have made NO changes to this machine in the last week
EXCEPT For the windows update tonight. (And I have
rebooted the machine several times in the past week.) It
only started acting up AFTER The windows Update Reboot
tonight.

I'm open to any suggestions as I dont see anything really
close to this in the KB for XP Pro.

Thanks in advance,

Dean

System restore doesnt seem to do anything. I believe
they were both classified as critical updates.

Its darn frustrating at this point. I'm thinking that I
may just have to try a repair install from CD. DO you
think that would help?

Dean

There is some chance that it would help. The problem seems very strange, not
quite like the usual problems for which Repair Install is used. You may want
to back up your data beforehand, just in case.
