Did a virus scan. Ran adaware. When I try to go to
Symantec and do a virus scan IE gives me the error "Your
current security settings prohibit running active X
controls...". I get the same message if I go to Trend
Micros online virus scan. I go to Windows update and it
won't load current update software. I uninstalled IE and
modified the registry key per knowlege base article so I
could install IE from a disk. It still says there is a
newer version on the machine and won't install. Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated.

Mike:

Open MSIE: Tools: Internet Options: Security tab: Trusted Sites.
Click on the Sites button
Uncheck "Require server verification..."
Add the following via the Web sites field:
*.microsoft.com
*.symantec.com

Close MSIE

Now try Windows Update and Symantec.com
