If I don't have to follow corporate design of a company but make my own
presentation:
(A) a light background for "normal" slides, sometimes combined with a dark
(or photo) title slide.

Easy, I prefer to use a dark background, certainly for longer presentations.
But the company I do almost all my work for has a brand image which enforces
a light background, so prefer one, use the other!

Oh, man. I think you must work with me, because it's the same thing here!
Almost all of my clients (especially the newer ones, it seems) like light
backgrounds. I suspect it's a general graphics trend or something...

I think that the important thing is not to have the difference between the
background and foreground objects (especially text) too stark, as it tends
to intimidate the audience and affect the eyes.

For this reason, I tend to prefer bland, pastel backgrounds, with text that
isn't too bright or contrasty. So long as it can be easily read.

I have seen many, many PPT presentations in my time, and 9 times out of 10 I
cringe at the lack of thought, in the initial design, for the long-suffering
target audience.

A bad presentation seriously detracts from the message.

OK. Here's mine:

Whatever suits the current client. A current project calls for toolbar buttons
that switch from light to dark backgrounds at will. Betcha didn't expect to
get a "BOTH! In one presentation!" answer. <g>
