I have a problem sharing a printer locally attached to a Windows XP
Pro SP2 machine. All computers are on the same private subnet behind a
router and are in the same workgroup. The NT 4.0 server can see the XP
machine and its printer in its Network Neighborhod. Windows 98
machines can see the XP computer but not the printer. On 98, when I
doubleclick the XP machine's entry in NN, I get the error, "Device not
Accessible." I have also checked other settings on the XP machine: The
printer is working and has been configured with the latest HP drivers
for XP, printer sharing is enabled and the printer has a unique share
name, File and Print Sharing is enabled in the network connection, it
is also checked on in the Firewall Exceptions list, ports 445, 137,
138, and 139 are checked on as open. I have been through all the
troubleshooting in XP Help and Support. I checked Microsoft's support
site for articles related to this problem--could not find any.
Printer sharing should be simple. Am I missing something when it comes
to 98-to-XP connections?
