NVIDIA launches RTX 3070, 3080 and 3090 for £469, £649, £1399

NVIDIA unveiled the new line of 3000 series RTX graphics cards yesterday, but the biggest surprise was the huge leap in performance and a reduction in price. The RTX 3070 costs £479, but claims to match the hugely expensive 2080 RTX in performance. The pressure from AMD and the next generation of consoles has put considerable pressure on NVIDIA, so the pricing on the RTX 3070 is likely to tempt many high end gamers to make the switch.

Pricing and Release Dates
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 - £469, $499, €499 (October)
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 - £649, $699, €699 (17th September)
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 - £1399, $1499, €1499 (24th September)

NVIDIA are calling the RTX 30xx series the biggest generational leap in graphics card technology, which looks to have some truth to it. These new cards are based on their Ampere architecture, offering near double the performance and efficiency of the older Turing based 2000 series. If you're looking to game at 60FPS in 4k, this may finally be the upgrade you need.

The best pick of the bunch may be the RTX 3070, which at £469 is still a very expensive graphics card, but offers incredible performance and is priced at less than half the cost of the RTX 2080. If you're on a 9xx or 10xx series card, this could be a good time to make a generational leap. It's equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 and is expected to be even faster than the RTX 2080 Ti.

RTX graphics cards introduced some game-changing technology, allowing for lifelike lighting and associated boosts in performance. NVIDIA created a demo game that shows just how impressive this technology is. Take a look at the video below (ideally fully screen at max. res) and bear in mind that this is a real-time rendered, fully playable game - not a pre-rendered video:
