Yellow Shield in Notification Area "Downloading Updates"?

I've got a yellow shield in the noticification area (near the clock)
that has an exclamation point on it and says "downloading updates" on
it when I hold the cursor over it. It says nothing when I right click
it.

What is it? I don't like stuff downloading when I don't know what it
is!

Mine says "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to download
these updates."
It's a message from MS to say there are updates ready to download and
install. You probably don't have your PC set to automatically download,
just to be notified.

Hi Bruce,

It means you have automatic updates enabled, and the icon is there to let
you know that there is one or more in progress. When you installed SP2, you
were given options on how to handle autoupdates. You can choose to enable
automatic installation, disable it completely, notify before downloading, or
notify before installing. The security center applet in the control panel
will allow you to control this behavior.

Ditto! = It's REALLY confusing when you click on something and NOTHING SHOWS!!

I also found out that after you turn off the auto updates
it turns into a little RED "X'ed shield and that was also hard to get off!!

I wish Microsoft quit TEASING users like this....it's VERY uncalled for!!

I have this happen also when there is a "ERROR" or it is "OFFLINE" with my HP
all in one scanner/copier...
If you have such device try turning it on and see what happens!

Thanks folks. It seems obvious that it should be set up so you could
identify the source of the mysterious updates being downloaded. As far
as I could tell, there was no way to figure out who it was, and no way
to stop the download in progress. With so many viruses and the like
floating around there, it kind of made me nervous!

I saw and asked the exact same question at adaware cause I'd just finished a

My only question after that is I wonder just how Ferrari feels about M$ using
their insignia the gold shield with black knight horse as the task icon for
this security update download. Cause at 56k it definitely doesn't move like a
Ferrari.

I have mine turned to notify only (on the Auto-Updates Tab from
right-clicking My Comp and selecting Properties).

Only thing is - it keeps downloading updates (*full* updates, not just
the list). Very annoying. I have to go in, select "off" to make it
go away, and then put it back to notify.

Sounds buggy..Imagine that!
