XP Repair Install- updates won't install now!

I just did a repair install of XP Pro and the many Windows updates won't
install now. They appear to download but when the install runs it states that
thwese update were not installed, which appear to be all of them. This cycle
has run for a few days since doing the repair install and I'm wondering what
"bug" is preventing them from installing. H-E-L-P.

With which Service Pack level did you do the repair install? I seem
to recall an experience that I had when I repaired an XP with a XP
install CD below the actual Service Pack level that was already
installed on the hard drive. Windows Updates are "supposed" to only
be "permitted" starting with a Sevice Pack version (SP1???)

Try this:

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot may be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
(You may need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right
after an additional reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

I've just had the same problem earlier on today after an XP Repair Install.
I got as far as downloading the Updater and then the rest of the 79 updates
downloaded and would not install. I found and tried a previous "fix" posted
by MowGreen (MVP) 8/7/2007, where the instruction was to delete all of the
subfolders of Windows\SoftwareDistribution then download and save the Windows
Update v3 and the KB927891 patch, then install the Update and then the patch
and restart the system. The Update won't install because it says it is
already installed, but if I delete in in Add and Delete Programs, it still
says it is still installed - and the updates still won't update. I tried one
only and that failed. This Dial-a-Fix looks a bit too advanced for an
amateur like me. I'm beginning to despair. I hope to see feedback that
something works or I'm seriously considering a clean reinstallation might be
the simpler option.

I am unsure how 'checking/unchecking boxes and hitting the "go" button' is
advanced?

Okay, I admit I'm a coward, but will give it a try, I've got nothing to lose.
If others have had success could they please post. Thank you!

THANK YOU SHENAN! I tried the fix you originally told me of and it worked
like a charm :). After this the XP updates installed properly. It amazes me
that with a million potential problems and fixes you were able to hit the
nail on the head. You're either THAT GOOD or you've seen thisn problem
before. In any case thank you for your help. Dan

PS: Go for it Tess!
