XP Reloaded over old location... lost old documents/settings

I know I shouldn't have done it... but XP was just too far gone to fix. I
reloaded XP over the old systme and now I can see in Explorer where my old
"desktop", was, but I get an access denied when I try to open it. Any ideas
on recovering a few files I had on my old desktop?

Take ownership and copy them to your new one:

Next time, save yourself the aggravation and do a repair installation
instead. Had those files been encrypted, you would have permanently lost
them without an encryption certificate from the original installation. Read
