XP Pro install can't access some file on CD

I've installed XP Pro on other machines 5 times, and never seen this
nonsense: Got an error message saying "Setup cannot copy the file
cmprops.dll". Took out the CD, stuck it in another machine, copied that file
to a floppy, pointed setup to the floppy, and things went smoothly, for 2
seconds. Now, it says it can't find licwmi.dll.

What's going on here? Should I boot with a floppy and copy the entire i386
folder from the CD to the hard drive?

In most cases, a failure to copy files from a CD is due to smudges or fingerprints
on the surface of the CD itself.

Examine the Windows XP CD and make sure it is absolutely "pristine clean"
with no scratches, fingerprints or smudges. Use a mild non-ammonia based
household cleaning solution and a soft cloth to clean it.

We were working from a copy of the original XP CD. Cleaned the copy, tried
again, no go. Popped in the original, which is also spotless - no luck. I
could swear I've run across this problem mentioned elsewhere, but I can't
seem to come up with the solution. PITA computers. Can you imagine if
hammers behaved this way? We'd still be living in caves or mud huts.

While you should always check the cd for dirt, scratches, maybe if it is
a bad burn, in most cases failure to install an operating system is due
to faulty hardware. Start testing the RAM, the cd drive, and then the
hard drive.
