XP Pro denies access to old Docs and Settings on an old drive formerly used as primary on old system

I have an XP Pro system, Pentium D, 2 gigs of memory. The system is kept
fully patched and up-to-date.

I have an old drive which I used on my old, now defunct system. It was an
XP Pro installation, and the OS and drive worked just fine until I retired
the system. The drive had two partitions -- one for the operating system,
data and programs, the secondary partition for storage only. I took that
old drive and put it in a portable USB drive case. As a portable USB drive,
the drive works perfectly --- except......

My current system will not allow me to access the Documents and Settings
folder for my old identity on the old drive [which is now a USB drive]. I
can access everything else on the two partitions of the USB drive. I tried
telling windows to set up that USB drive as fully shared, with every
permission I could think of -- but still, no dice.

I'd like to be able to access all the folders on the USB drive without
exception.

Is there some setting I am missing? Some service that is running and
shouldn't be, or vice versa? Some explanation for what is going on and how
to fix it?

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

TIA

You need to disable Simple File Sharing and take ownership of
the files. Take a look at these articles for more info:

Nepatsfan,

Thank you for the very prompt response. I had run out of clues as to what I
was failing to understand, and so I didn't know how ask my question in a
form that MS Windows Help, Microsoft.com or Google would understand. Your
suggestion and readings were right on target. The articles were quite
helpful --- kb307874 and kb308421 especially so -- and the instructions
were effective. I can now access the entire drive, and I think I have
gained a bit more grasp of what was going on. I will be saving those kb
articles to reread.

Thanks again.

Hi:
I did the same step but it is not working for me.

My configuration is as follow:

I have desktop with XP Media Center
I have USB drive 200 GB
I have shared the drive and sub folder

I have laptop connected to network wireless
Laptop has XPMC
Laptop can access the drive but when I click on any folder, iget message
access denied.

The only thing I can say is that I use same login name on desktop as on
laptop.

Any idea why?
