XP PC - bootup stuck at 1st bootup screen

Tedm

I have a PC that runs Windows XP that I have been using for a few years. It
is custom built using an MSI 865GM3-LS motherboard and an Intel Pentium CPU.

On booting up it now gets stuck at the first bootup screen which displays an
MSI logo on the top left corner, and Intel Pentium Logo on the lower right
corner and some text in the middle that reads "8Xtreme Series",
"Performance, Durability, Stability",

I have reset the CMOS by setting the jumper to reset it, but still have the
same problem.

Help!! What is wrong? Is the motherboard bad, is it the battery, what is it?

Thanks!!

It could be anything. There's no way for us to tell from here. You just have
to do systematic hardware troubleshooting.

Thanks Malke,

I will go to the troubleshooting link you were kind enough to point me to.

However, my question was a general one that I was hoping it would be easy to
answer.

I've built and troubleshot many PCs, and have seen different error messages
including bootup/BIOS messages. I have not seen one like this where it
starts up the bootup process but stops at the first bootup screen. I was
hoping that it might be possible to narrow down the possible sources of such
errors.

Thanks and Best Regards!

Unfortunately, no. It could be your psu, your video card, your RAM, your
hard drive, your processor, your motherboard....

If you have a test card you could use it and see if that narrows things down
for you. Otherwise, pull everything off the board and start testing the old
fashioned way. Sorry.

I have had this problem myself once, and it was the graphics card. It may
not be, so try to borrow one from someone just to check before going to any
expense.

Already answered over on the XP General Board, but I'll repeat the
basic instructions here:
