XP "encounters problem"

I frequently get an error screen while running some of my
programs. It says "(name of program) has encountered
a problem, and needs to close. Sorry for the
inconvenience."

Does anybody know what this means, or what the "problem"
is likely to be? I never saw it until I installed
XP. Any help greatly appreciated.

Yes it also ask to send a report if you select yes it

will check MS database and look for a fix for it,if
it'smajor and a lot of people are having problems techs
will be working on it,you'll get a reply for the fix via
updates so check your updates often if your having
problems.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately this error message
does not suggest sending a report to MS. It also
doesn't give a "yes "no" option. It just shuts the
program down instantly -- which is what is so irritating.

I would still appreciate help with this.
